ICTSAS303 – Care for computer hardware
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to manage the maintenance and location of hardware.
It applies to frontline technical support individuals who work under a level of supervision but have some responsibility to maintain organisational hardware.
Element Performance Criteria
1. Establish safe work practices 1.1 Determine, record and apply relevant legal requirements and work health and safety (WHS) standards to the installation and maintenance of computer hardware

The assessment you are undertaking is graded satisfactory or not satisfactory. Upon successful completion of all assessments for this unit, you will be issued with a Statement of Attainment stating that you are “Competent”.
Assessment will be completed in class and in your self-study time. You will be able to access any relevant resources through the online learning system at You must keep a copy of your assignment or project.
You will be allowed two attempts on this assessment. That is, if your first attempt does not meet the performance criteria, you will be given the opportunity to resubmit once only. If you require a second attempt, this must be submitted within the duration of your course.

Overview and Tasks
During this project, you will create documentation for service & maintenance technicians to use. In addition, you will fill-out the forms you create whilst performing practical maintenance activities that are observed by your tutor.
1) Service & Maintenance Log Sheet (BLANK TEMPLATE)
You must cerate a document to be used by computer service technicians when performing maintenance on a PC. It must include the following sections:
A) Technician Details – An area for the technician to record their personal details.
B) Computer Details – What are the details of the computer being serviced?
C) Job Details – An area to summarise the job being carried out.
D) WHS Checklist – What safety precautions must be made during the service? List all essential WHS related tasks with an area to check off relevant ones.
E) Manufacturer documentation & recommendations – Where can manufacturer documentation, manuals or safety guides be located? You must include an area for summarising any manufacturer recommendations.
F) Storage / Placement Instructions – What are the storage instructions or suitable environmental conditions for the hardware?
G) Cleaning & Maintenance Checklist – What are the essential tasks that can be checked off whilst servicing the computer?
H) Software Installed (security & diagnostic) – Did the technician replace, remove or install any software? It would also be useful to include any licence or account information her.
I) Hardware replaced / removed – Did the technician replace any hardware or remove obsolete or damaged components?
J) Summary / Notes / Recommendations – Here you must set a space for the technician to leave notes or make recommendations. EG what system protection devices are required or when is the next service due?
2) Service & Maintenance Log Sheet (COMPLETED FORM)
Using the template you created in the previous task, you must complete each section as you perform relevant maintenance on a computer (in task three).
During the service/maintenance practical activity, you must be under supervision of your trainer.
3) Service & Maintenance Activity (PRACTICAL TASK)
You must only complete this task whilst under supervision of your trainer and on equipment designated to you.
Using the document you created in task one, you must perform basic maintenance of the computer. The tasks you carry out will be determined by your documentation.
