Individual Coursework: Planning

Scenario

The Client, the Local Authority, have asked you, as the proprietor of a local Design and Build company, to design a single storey cafeteria kiosk and seating area, together with toilet facilities for both male and female and disabled persons, all to be sited in a suitable position in Canbury Park, Kingston upon Thames.

In addition they have asked that where possible you make allowance for sustainability in the design (such as consideration of local flora and fauna, waste handling, possible bike rack, possible use of solar heating, grey waste water system, rainwater harvesting and any other idea that may be considered suitable), together with an outline of sustainable provision for use during the actual construction (such as use of segregated skips for waste).

The Council/ Local Authority wish to satisfy themselves of your managerial ability and wish for you to demonstrate how well you can plan the actual carrying out of the work and have asked for your programme of works (and they expect it to be as using a recognised brand of software – in this instance Microsoft 2010), a brief statement about how the programme is useful to assist sound management (this will demonstrate your actual understanding of the use of programmes), along with your design drawings.

The Council have also asked for brief statements about your risk assessment regarding health and safety and any other project risks that you consider possible, together with an indication of measures that you would adopt to counteract any such risks,…

…a brief statement showing your company’s commitment to sustainability to be used in the scheme…

…and finally a brief statement about ethical considerations adopted throughout (such as use of fair trade procedures, fair pay which can even show during the programming allocation of resources and hours of working expected from the workforce).

To summarise, the Tasks for you to carry out from the above scenario are:

1. Produce design drawings of the cafeteria, surrounding paving, access paths, toilets, waste bins, bike rack and so on all as per your considered design.

(The precise number and format of the drawings are left to the student – ideally say 1:50 scale for the plan and 1:100 for the site layout and an artist’s perspective view, in size/s A3 and/or A4, as considered suitable by the student, all ideally by hand, but if wished some detail could be in CAD)

2. Produce a simple Programme using Microsoft Project 2010 (accessible via KU self-service – if in doubt ask for assistance in the LRC and there is much assistance on the worldwide web: just google: “how to use Microsoft 2010” – additionally there is much relevant material on BlackBoard under CE5014), or at least a sample of one, indicating understanding of the format and use of such a programme (i.e. a Bar Chart/ Gantt Chart and/or CPA, Critical Path Analysis)

3. Produce brief statements regarding:
(a) The usefulness of bar charts/ CPAs in management planning such as for the cafeteria,
(b) The sustainability policy to be adopted for the cafeteria,
(c) The risks that can happen in a project and how they can be allowed for such as for the cafeteria
(d) The ethical considerations to be allowed for during the design, estimating, programming/ planning for the cafeteria.

You are encouraged to carry out your own research. Consider sources such as books by the authors Chudley and Greeno and there are others – do consult the module guide reading list; look up the RIBA Plan of Work 2013. The work is to be a maximum 1000 words, together with illustrations/ sketches/ drawings/ programme print-out/s.

The following shows the six main areas that are included in the original coursework and are included here as an aid to this coursework, together with some updating amendments, accompanied by some hints/ helpful suggestions – these are not exhaustive – you may decide to incorporate some or all of these points and/or others – this is merely an indication of the sort of points that could be addressed:

Planning Software – Microsoft Project; produce Bar Chart showing Critical Path, Start and End Dates, any Milestone dates, calendar settings, holidays, weekends, constraints, internal and external dependencies, defaults/ overrides, exceptions, allowance for standard working hours with amendments as necessary for competitive bids, resource allocation and levelling, concurrent working, “crashing”, costing and other techniques. (Whilst this is unlikely to occur here with the cafeteria, the original coursework allowed for comment on planning to be in the form of master and sub programmes and possible allowance for different sites occurring at the same time, for repetitive work where economies of scale and other efficiencies are possible and possible use of other forms of programming such as Line of Balance typically used for mass housing developments – this is stated for information only to bring students up to parity of knowledge and only needs to be commented upon here if the student considers relevant – however, it is stressed that in this coursework as regards the cafeteria this is most unlikely to be needed)

Business Operation – incorporating allowances for overheads and profit, prioritisation, cost build-up/ information, estimating, margin calculation, head office and site specific (on-costs) overheads, preliminaries, risk allowances/ contingencies.

Sustainability – incorporated in elements in design, materials selection, methods of working, techniques chosen to be used.

Ethics – Fair Wages and working practices (e.g. working hours taking into account agreements between employers and trade unions), non collusion, ethical purchasing.

Risk – Risk assessment in estimating and project risk allocation (note: that there is another form of risk assessment which is to do with Health and Safety, which could be seen as related); risk log or register.

Design – the original sketching to be incorporated was as regards the Canbury Park project carried out in Year 1– N.B. it is the intention that primarily manual drawing is to be utilised, however a certain amount may be produced by CAD (as an approximate guide call this split 80% manual: 20% CAD). This coursework is still based upon Canbury Park but to differentiate it is explicitly as regards a new design for a cafeteria as described above.

Your work has to be presented as follows:
• A front cover showing the module title and code, the title of the work, your name and KU number
• Word processed on one side of A4 paper and pages should be numbered
• Work should be bound together – do NOT present each page in a separated plastic wallet
• Submit your work in an A4 plastic folder – A3 sheets to be folded in “concertina” fashion
• Edit and proof-read work prior to submission – use SEC3 if needed
• The text must be referenced using Harvard style:
